Selfie-proof? At the heart of this collaborative composition, which Kjartansson refers to as a feminine nihilistic gospel song, are the words that Gunnarsdttir wrote for various performances and video works of her own but collaged together for a song by Kjartansson; they are lyrics that articulate what Kjartansson described as lifes dazzling defeat, but that also expand to reflect on the strength and persistence of affective ties, the instability of life, love, loss, and also a sense of radical acceptance. No artist has a favourite piece. Ragnar Kjartansson's beloved video installation The Visitors (2012) is back at SFMOMA. If this is an account of how one particular, collaborative artwork came into being, its also a sly description of social life itself as a state aspiring to art, or to something like aesthetic bliss defined by Vladimir Nabokov as a sense of being somehow, somewhere, connected with other states of being where art (curiosity, tenderness, kindness, ecstasy) is the norm. To live such a life, Kjartansson seems to have intuited, you have to do it with conviction, but also with a sense of absurdity, futility, silliness like a self-aware libertine cavorting on plump satin pillows as Jacobins oil the guillotines. The temptation when watching Ragnar Kjartansson's nine-channel videowork The Visitors (2012) is to succumb to joy. Experimental Rock. Nine-channel HD video projection
Bjarnadttir describes the piece as an ode to love, youth, music and beauty and to fleeting moments of love and transcendence that we wish would last forever. It evokes, in other words, the spirit of the 18th century, a period with which Kjartansson (like Vivienne Westwood, the founder of punk fashion) has long been infatuated. The artist blurs the distinctions between mediums, approaching his painting practice as performance, likening his films to paintings, and his performances to sculpture. Ragnar Kjartansson: Time Changes Everything, the artist's solo exhibition at the De Pont Museum, opens September 17, 2022 and runs through January 29, 2023.. Kjartansson works with multiple mediums - from large-scale video installations, performance, and ceramics, to painting, theater, opera, and pop music - and recurrent themes include endurance, clichs, and a sense of deeply romantic .
